Overview
The Hong Kong Museum of Art is committed to promoting Hong Kong art. This talk series invites Hong Kong artists and scholars from diverse fields to share their insights, offering audience an in-depth exploration of the multifaceted charm and cultural richness of Hong Kong art.
For the inaugural session, we are honoured to welcome esteemed ceramic artist Rosanna Li, whose remarkable half-century career has shaped the soul of the city through her works of clay. With deft hands, she sculpts the essence of everyday life—her iconic, plump figurines have not only graced museums and galleries but have also animated public spaces, like the airport, MTR station and bustling streets. These rotund, cheerful companions, with their soothing smiles, have become a balm for urban fatigue, weaving themselves into the collective memory of Hong Kong people.
If clay is her language, then wit and wisdom are its cadence. A master at transforming everyday observations into artistic expressions, Rosanna playfully subverts conventions through puns and conceptual twists. Beneath their whimsy, her works offer incisive social commentary that delights viewers while inviting reflection. Her themes balance levity and depth, from the vibrant vignettes of cha chaan teng (local café) culture to the reinvention of cultural symbols, showcasing her boundless creativity in turning the mundane into the extraordinary.
In this talk, Rosanna will trace her artistic journey, beginning with her early two-dimensional works. Audience will embark on a journey through her creative cosmos, exploring questions such as: How do her signature ceramics capture Hong Kong’s daily rhythms? How does her public art engage with the city? What do her collections of found objects reveal about cultural legacy? This exploration will unveil the rigour behind her wit and the timelessness within the familiar, leaving attendees inspired.
