The four arts of poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal carving have long been the lifelong pursuits of Chinese literati and scholars. Mastery across these art forms is not merely a testament to skill; it reflects personal cultivation and emotional expression. We are honoured to welcome renowned Hong Kong artist Mr Ou Da-wei to deliver a talk on calligraphy. As a master of the four arts, Mr Ou has steadfastly persevered in his innovation with the essence of traditional Chinese art. His unique style has garnered widespread acclaim and established him as a pillar of Hong Kong’s contemporary art scene.

For decades, Mr Ou has refined his expertise across various calligraphic scripts, with his clerical script widely recognised as the most distinctive. Breaking from tradition, Mr Ou has sought to explore new dimensions, where brushstrokes flow freely amidst unconventional compositions, infused with the spirit of stone-carving and often revealing a playful, genuine spontaneity. Drawing inspiration from daily life, his works are filled with wit and fantastical ideas, showcasing his sense of humour, profound knowledge and reflections on life, leaving viewers into an endless realm of contemplation.

Throughout his tireless journey of creation, Mr Ou has embraced a sense of peace, viewing art as his lifelong pursuit. In this talk, he will share insights from his six-decade journey in calligraphy, offering advice on how to learn about and appreciate this timeless art form and the enduring charm it embodies.
