We are sad to announce that Gaylord Chan, a renowned Hong Kong artist, passed away aged 95 on 22nd June 2020.

Born in Hong Kong in 1925, Gaylord Chan began to paint at the age of 42 and in 1970 completed a Certificate Course in Art and Design at the Department of Extra-Mural Studies, The University of Hong Kong. Over succeeding decades, he never stopped pursuing his creative passion, successfully developing a distinctive and unique style with acrylic on canvas. In 2001, his deteriorated health led him to work with computer drawing software on his artistic creations. His perseverance and relentless spirit are truly reflected in these remarkable digital paintings. Widely exhibited in Hong Kong and overseas, his works are collected by museums and private collectors.

Gaylord Chan made a significant contribution to the development of Hong Kong art. In 1972, he served on the visual arts committee for the Hong Kong Arts Centre. He was co-founder of the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society in 1974, serving as chairperson for the first four years. He founded Culture Corner Academy in 1989, and Artmatch Group in 1995, where he mentored a number of artists over the years. Chan received multiple awards, including the Urban Council Fine Arts Award in 1983, an MBE in 1986, Artist of the Year Award from Hong Kong Artists Guild in 1990 and Bronze Bauhinia Star (B.B.S.) in 2013. In 2019, he was a recipient of an Honorary Fellowship awarded by the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Since 1993, Chan has ceaselessly contributed to promoting Hong Kong art hand in hand with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department as a Museum Expert Advisor. There are 28 digital works by Chan together with his poems which are now on display at the interactive education corner entitled "Small Mind‧Big Brush" at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, revealing his lifelong passion on artistic creation and expressing his blessing to the Museum.

We highly appreciate Gaylord's immeasurable contribution to promoting Hong Kong art over the years. He will be missed and will always be remembered.
