1962.03.02 The Hong Kong Museum of Art, formerly known as the City Hall Museum and Art Gallery, was founded and housed in the City Hall High Block. |

1975.02.01 The first Hong Kong Art Biennial, an exhibition inaugurated as a biennial survey of the development of Hong Kong art, was opened. |

1991.11.15 Official opening of the Hong Kong Museum of Art at the current Tsim Sha Tsui premises. |

1992.09.26 Inauguration of the Xubaizhai Gallery of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy to house the collection donated by Mr Low Chuck Tiew (1911-1993). |

1995.12.14 The K.S. Lo Gallery, an extension of the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware, was constructed to house The K.S. Lo Foundation's donation of Chinese ceramics and seals. |

1997.12.16 - 1998.03.01 To celebrate the reunification of Hong Kong to China, "National Treasures – Gems of China's Cultural Relics Exhibition" was presented and attracted 226,065 visitors. |

1998.11.03 - 1999.01.17 "Egyptian Treasures from the British Museum" with a total attendance of 310,029, is the most well-received exhibition at the museum. |

2001.05.18 A 3-day museum panorama was held at the Piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre to celebrate the first "International Museum Day" here in Hong Kong. |

2001.12.13 The first Biennial of the new millennium opened. The Museum joined hands with over twenty art institutes and universities to organize various fringe programmes during the Biennial period. |

2005.02.05 - 2005.04.10 To celebrate the "Year of France in China", "Impressionism: Treasures from the National Collection of France" was presented and attracted 284,263 visitors, an exhibition with the second highest attendance at the museum. |

2006.09.30 - 2006.12.03 "Artists and Their Models – Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou, Paris" ended with a total attendance of 133,986. |
