Overview
Hong Kong art reflects the city's unique position as a cultural crossroads, synthesising Chinese traditions and Western influences into distinctive artistic vocabularies and aesthetics. Among the artists participating in this exhibition, many draw on Chinese artistic traditions and philosophical thought. They refuse to be constrained by inherited frameworks; instead, they reinvent conventions, cultivating highly individual practices. Their works are often deeply rooted in local contexts, reflecting Hong Kong's unique urban landscape, rhythm of life and cultural sensibilities. Central to many of their practices are cross‑media transformation and experimentation. Through multifaceted artistic languages, familiar forms are reimagined into contemporary expressions—paintings that resonate with light and shadow, ink interwoven with digital media, and traditional crafts that collide with innovative ideas—sparking an aesthetic uniquely tied to this time and place.
The "Live: Hong Kong Art Exhibition" showcases this vibrant creative spirit. It unfolds through four themes: Urban Stage, Landscape Reimagined, Virtual Reality and Transformation. It brings together 19 artists who are actively shaping the city's contemporary art scene, ranging from established masters to rising stars. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a selection of their recent works across a variety of media—including painting, ink art, ceramics, sculpture, video, installation and multimedia—offering a comprehensive showcase of the exceptional creativity and diverse practice of Hong Kong's artistic landscape.
The exhibition also directs attention to the moments before creation. The Wing (Lower), on the ground floor, displays miniature studios that reveal the inspirations behind the artists' works and invite the audience into a realm where ideas have yet to take shape. The video series Studio and Beyond, guided by the artists themselves, uses their individual studios as a lens to reflect the unique artistic ecology of Hong Kong. This marks the first time the Hong Kong Museum of Art has invited a number of artists to create on-site, turning its gallery into an open studio, where the audience can step behind the scenes and interact closely with the artists. Through this personal experience, visitors can witness the entire creative process, from ideation and experimentation with materials to the final fruition of the works.
